THE WINE
Vinha Grande is a red wine from the Douro, classic and intense, with a well-marked character, which reflects all of the richness and quality of the region in the creation of the best blends. Vinha Grande forms part of the wine portfolio of Casa Ferreirinha, the house with the longest-standing experience in making quality Douro wines, and one of the world’s leading Douro names.

TASTING NOTES
Casa Ferreirinha Vinha Grande Red 2014 has a deep ruby colour. Its aroma is intense and complex, with a predominance of floral and violet notes, together with red fruits such as strawberry and raspberry, aromas of spices such as pepper and discreet, very well integrated oak. On the palate, it has good volume, well integrated acidity, velvety tannins, together with notes of red fruits, some minerality and spices. Its finish is elegant and persistent.

HARVEST YEAR
The wine-growing year of 2014 was characterised by its atypical weather. It was a particularly rainy year, with a cool summer, marked by great instability, with heat waves at the start of summer and the beginning of autumn. The months of January, which was exceptionally hot, and August, which was cooler than the average over the last 30 years, contributed to an advancing of the vegetative cycle, with grapes that presented very good and balanced levels of sugar, acidity and phenolic compounds at the end of ripening. The harvest took place at the start of the first days of September, and some rainfall was recorded in the middle of the month, due to which it was necessary to bolster the careful work of selecting grapes in the vineyard and in the cellar, in order to optimise the quality of the wines.

WINEMAKING
Vinified with sophisticated technology in Cima Corgo and in the Douro, the grapes selected for the Vinha Grande are subjected to gentle crushing and destemming, followed by alcoholic fermentation at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks, with long maceration by pumping over and robotic plunging.

MATURATION
Casa Ferreirinha Vinha Grande Red 2014 was transported to V.N. Gaia between October and December, where its maturation or "elevage" took place for a period ranging between 12 and 18 months in used French oak barrels. The blend was then prepared based on selections made during the innumerable tastings and analyses performed in this period, having gone through only one light filtration before bottling. As it was not cold stabilised, the formation of a deposit during bottle ageing is natural.

STORE
While it can be consumed when young, Vinha Grande Red 2014 benefits from bottle maturation for between 2 and 3 years, reaching its peak at between 5 and 6 years after the harvest. However, it remains good to drink for around 10-15 years. It is recommended that the bottle is kept horizontally, in a dry and cool place, avoiding light.

SERVE
Over time, sediments may form. It should be opened a short while before being consumed to breathe and develop at its best. Serve at 16ºC-18ºC.

ENJOY
Casa Ferreirinha Vinha Grande Red 2014 is an excellent choice for accompanying traditional Portuguese dishes, a wide range of meats, cheeses and well-prepared pastas. Try it as an aperitif with cured and spicy cheeses.
