The Barón de Chirel wine appeared in 1986 as a result of experiments in vinification using a selection of grapes from very old vines, 80 to 110 years old, with very low yields and very high quality. From the results of these trials a new style of wine was born, the precursor of what could be called “new era” Rioja wines. This wine is produced on a very limited scale, and only in the very best vintages, when it can express all the character of the vineyard, the terroir and the variety, drawn together in a harmonious whole. From the 1995 harvest onwards, Riscal select the grapes for this great wine by hand, with the installation of sorting tables. Riscal was the first winery in Spain to introduce this method, setting a landmark in the production of fine-quality red wines. Barón de Chirel undergoes fermentation at a controlled temperature of 26º in lowcapacity, Allier-oak vats. Afterwards, malolactic fermentation takes place in finegrained, Allier-oak casks. Ageing will last between 18 and 24 months,
depending on the characteristics of each harvest. Once this is complete, the wine is bottled and subsequently it is left to round off for no less than 2 years before it is released for sale.
Warm autumn with hardly any frosts and very little rainfall. With the arrival of winter the weather made a turnaround bringing a series of abundant precipitations (some in the form of snow) and frosts which fell to as low as 9ºC below zero. Budbreak began around the 15 April, a month which saw a Sharp rise in temperatures to almost summer levels, which meant the vines came on very quickly. Veraison began on 30 July. The summer was extremely dry and it was not until the second half of September that any moderate rainfall was recorded (15 litres/m2). Harvesting began on 27 September. The resulting harvest was unusually high in likely alcoholic strength and colour-related compounds. The total growth cycle was 205 days. The D.O. Ca Rioja rating: Excellent.
A dark cherry colour, lively with few signs of evolution. High aromatic intensity in which the toasted and spicy aromas from the French oak predominate, together with ripe, dark-berried fruit. In the mouth, it is fresh and smooth with soft, polished tannins in which the wood is not too intrusive. Complex and elegant with a long, balanced finish.
